Domestic cat: basic qualities of cats

Of all the animals domesticated by humans, perhaps, it is the domestic cat (scientifically – Félis silvéstris cátus) that today has one of the most privileged positions. And, like a dog, it belongs to the so-called companion animals, living in close proximity to humans.

However, she does not lose her natural instincts and is able to effectively catch small game. There is still debate in the scientific community over whether a cat is completely a domestic animal or whether it can be attributed to the so-called “semi-domestic” species. Be that as it may, the history of the partnership between a cat and a person goes back more than 10 thousand years, and most researchers agree that this partnership began in Nubia or Egypt.

The first documented mention of cats dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. e., when in ancient Egypt to protect granaries from rodents, steppe cats began to be widely used. Then the Phoenician sailors brought cats on their ships: new pets effectively fought with mice and rats and were unpretentious. And since the Phoenicians swam around the then known world, the cat settled on all its shores. But where does our affectionate pets?

HOME CAT – WHAT IS IT?
Today, about 100 million domestic cats live in Europe, and most of all – in Russia and France. More often they live in cities, and more than half of all modern city cats practically do not leave their homes.

The small size and independent behavior makes cats more adapted to the sedentary lifestyle of modern citizens. In addition, they have unique properties that make them charming pets, but retain the features and behavior of their wild ancestors.

It is believed that during coexistence with humans, the genotype of cats has changed less than in dogs. Both the physiology and psychology of the cat remained like a lone hunter, but now these animals are capable of both gratitude and deep affection for the owner.

CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF CATS
Most cats are characterized by attachment to their habitat, daily routine and lifestyle. If she always lived alone and never moved, then the appearance of another cat or dog in the house can become a real stress for her and even lead to health problems. If the cat lives with other animals from an early age, then most likely it will be comfortable when new pets appear in the house.

Cats are very sensitive to sounds and smells, which we do not even suspect of, and it is not always easy for owners to evaluate the emotional state of a pet. It should be remembered that for cats it is absolutely normal to use all three dimensions of space, so owners should take care of the freedom of movement of the cat around the house. Do not limit the mobility of cats, especially domestic cats, often living in a relatively small space of the apartment and not having the full ability to realize their hunting instinct. It is worth organizing the animal the maximum possible freedom, without harm to the furniture and the cat’s health, and regularly play with it using safe toys. Do not worry, if your pet constantly crawls into any nooks and crannies, you just need to make sure that nothing is threatening him there.

A special place in providing a cat with decent living conditions is drinking water. It should always be very fresh, in no case standing and not musty. Flowing is best suited, for this you can purchase a special fountain. But the water poured into a high-quality large bowl of metal or ceramic will not be worse.

Change the water at least once a day, regardless of whether the pet drank everything that was poured or not. Indeed, to satisfy thirst, a cat does not need a lot of water. This is due to the fact that they came from desert inhabitants and are able to save fluid.

BREEDS OF CATS
Over the centuries of the coexistence of cats and humans, breeders have bred many different breeds, relying on breeding techniques: selecting and fixing breeds according to a set of specific traits. Occasionally, genetic mutations intervened in breeding schemes, laying the foundations for new breeds: for example, it is believed that the Canadian sphynx appeared by chance, as a result of such a mutation.

More than 70 cat breeds are currently isolated, although breed standards may vary. In addition to external differences, the breeds are characterized by behavioral and social characteristics, a tendency to disease, and, therefore, certain individual needs for care and nutrition.

You can understand these features with the help of specialists: veterinarians and proven breeders. They will help you find the cat that suits you, as well as tell you how to properly care for it, what to look for to maintain its health and what behavioral features you can expect from it.
